From one rented room and 384 followers to a name the aesthetics industry knew.

Overview & Background

Josh Davis is a registered nurse who came to aesthetics by an unusual road. He studied music at Vanderbilt, earned a second degree in nursing from Belmont, and spent years in trauma and critical care before finding the field that let him use both sides of himself: the clinician and the artist.

When we met him, he was a nurse injector renting a single treatment room, with 384 followers on Instagram. His results were beautiful and his patients loved him. Almost no one else knew he existed.

The ambition went beyond filling a schedule. Josh wanted to build something of his own. For us, that raised the question at the heart of this work: what if the injector, not the clinic, was the brand?

A Market Built Around the Practice, Not the Practitioner

The demand was already there. In 2018 the American Society of Plastic Surgeons counted more than 7.4 million botulinum toxin procedures in the U.S., a category that had grown more than 800% since 2000. Soft tissue fillers added another 2.6 million.

But the way the industry presented itself had not caught up. Brands were built around practices, physicians and product names. Websites led with the medical director. Marketing led with the toxin, not the person holding the syringe.

Nurse injectors did much of the hands-on work, yet they were largely invisible. Patients often chose a clinic first and a provider second. The idea that an aesthetic nurse could be a name people sought out and followed was still new.

That gap was the opportunity.

The Challenge

Josh had the skill, the warmth and the instinct for natural results. What he didn't have was visibility, a story the market could hold onto, or a system that turned attention into appointments. A conventional answer would have been a polished clinic brand with a logo, a price list and a stream of before-and-afters.

We believed that would make Josh look like everyone else, and the thing that made him different, Josh himself, would disappear behind it.

The Insight: The Person Is the Experience

Josh's patients weren't only coming back for their lips or their tox. They were coming back for him: his candor, his humor, his refusal to overdo it, and the way he made people feel at ease in the chair.

That became the brand driver:

The person is the experience.

People want to know who is treating them before they ever book. So instead of hiding Josh behind a clinic identity, we put him in front of it. Years later, Josh described his own turning point the same way. When he had 384 followers, he was told he "really should just get on camera and just be yourself."

It shifted the story away from what Josh offered toward who Josh is, and why that made him worth seeking out.

Our Approach

We worked in five phases, each building on the last.

01 - Discovery & Positioning

We started by listening: to Josh, to his patients and to the market. We looked at what made his work distinct (natural results, honesty about what people actually need, and a big, generous personality) and where competitors were silent. The positioning that emerged was simple. Tox Josh is the injector who tells you the truth and makes you look like yourself, only better.

02 - Identity & Voice

A personal brand needs a name people can say, remember and recommend. We built everything around Tox Josh: a voice that sounded the way he talks in the chair, warm, quick and a little cheeky, with visual standards that kept his content recognizable across every post.

03 - Content System

Consistency beats inspiration. We built a repeatable content mix around clear pillars (below), a rhythm Josh could sustain between patients, and a filming approach that favored real moments over heavy production. The goal was a system he could run every week, not a campaign that would end.

04 - Community & Conversion

Followers only matter if they become patients. We treated comments and direct messages as conversations, not notifications, and made the path from a post to a consultation short and obvious. Community was where trust turned into bookings.

05 - Scaling the Brand into a Business

As demand grew, the brand had to carry more than one person's schedule. We helped extend the identity into the practice itself, giving the clinic a premium visual world while keeping Josh at the center of the story.

The Content Pillars

Every post had a job. Four pillars carried the brand, each moving people one step closer to the chair.

  • Education and myth-busting. Clear, honest explanations of treatments, what's realistic and when the answer is "no." This built credibility and filtered for patients who wanted natural results.

  • Results. Before-and-afters that showed his signature: undetectable, balanced, never overdone.

Results gave followers proof, and proof gave them a reason to book.

  • Personality and behind-the-scenes. Josh as himself: funny, candid and human. This was the pillar that made people feel they already knew him, which is what turns a stranger into a patient.

  • Community. Answering questions, celebrating patients and inviting conversation. This kept people returning, recommending and referring.

Together, the pillars did what a clinic brand alone could not. They made the injector the reason to choose the practice.

Making the Practice Visible: Whisper Wood

As the practice grew, we gave it a visual world of its own. Whisper Wood, a Brentwood medical aesthetics clinic, was built on a single idea: take a journey into the woods. Our task was to give clinical work a language that behaves like calm.

We built the type, the sage-and-amber palette and the photographic register around Josh's own East Tennessee hikes: misted greens, candlelit skin and a sense of quiet luxury. From there, we provided creative direction and photoshoot production, retouched the imagery, and designed the campaign and lookbook. We also helped produce the brand guide, packaging for the Whisper Wood Essentials line, a nine-post grid and a six-story launch set for social.

The result was a practice brand that felt premium and restful, sitting alongside a personal brand that felt bold and personal. Two layers, one story.

From Followers to a Business

The personal brand became the engine of the business.

Attention became demand. Josh grew from one rented room into Whisper Wood, a multimillion- dollar medical aesthetics practice in Brentwood. The practice was later renamed Tox Josh Studios, so the business carried the name his audience already knew.

The recognition followed. Josh was voted one of the Top 100 Injectors in the United States four years in a row. He was appointed to the Merz Aesthetics Advisory Board and became an independent consultant for Prollenium. Industry companies invited him to take over their Instagram accounts, and he spoke to audiences of aesthetic professionals.

team members, with a schedule booked more than a year out, in Josh's own words

The platform kept growing. His podcast, Tea Time with Tox Josh, reached No. 1 in seven countries. At the height of the brand, Josh described a team of about 20 and a calendar booked more than a year in advance.

A nurse injector in Tennessee had become a name people followed, recommended and asked for by name.

Where He Is Now

Josh's work grew to include training and mentoring other injectors, and a wider focus on inner wellbeing alongside outer beauty. Today he continues to mentor aesthetic providers while exploring a new, more personal chapter of his work. That evolution is part of the lesson too. A personal brand built on authenticity doesn't trap a person. It grows with them.

Key Takeaways

  • The person can be the product. In service businesses, people choose who they trust. If your talent is the reason clients return, build the brand around it, not around a logo.

  • Personality is a strategy, not a risk. The qualities that make you memorable in person are the ones that cut through online. Don't sand them down.

  • Systems beat bursts. Growth came from a content mix Josh could sustain every week, not from a single viral moment.

  • Every post needs a job. Education builds credibility, results build proof, personality builds connection and community builds loyalty. Together, they build bookings.

  • Build the brand to carry the business. A personal brand can open the door, but the business needs an identity, visual system and content engine that can scale. That is exactly what OĀS// builds: brand positioning, content systems and the photography and film that bring them to life.
